1. Why Traditional Putty and Primer Fail

Kolkata is built on alluvial delta soil with high groundwater levels. In ground-floor, first-floor, and shaft-adjacent walls, moisture climbs vertically through natural capillary action.

When painters scrape off peeling paint and instantly apply acrylic wall putty, they trap moisture behind a vapor barrier. As summer heat warms the room, water vapor pressure blows the paint right off the wall.

2. The Permanent 3-Step Remediation Protocol

Step 1: Scrape the plaster 1 foot above the damp zone down to the red brickwork. Treat the exposed bricks with a salt-neutralizing chemical wash.

Step 2: Apply a two-component crystalline polymer waterproof slurry (such as Dr. Fixit Dampguard or Fosroc Brushbond). The active chemicals migrate deep into the brick pores, forming insoluble crystals that permanently block moisture.

Step 3: Re-plaster using sand and cement mixed with an integral waterproofing liquid compound. Allow 14 days of complete curing before painting.
